Barb and I have begun the process of building an addition to our Cottage. The blog will be a visual and written journal of the progress. There may not be a daily entry but as progress is made posts will be made frequently. Estimates for completion are from four to eight months.

Day 219
The dust has settled...
Drywall is hung, taping and spackling next...
Hopefully done by the weekend...
Your friendly blogger is taking a couple of days off from the "Job Site."
I'm driving to Hampton, VA today for the Southern Bay Race Week...
I'll be serving on the Race Committee to help assure the safe and orderly "herding of the cats" who will be sailing Friday, Sat., and Sunday....wish me luck...
There are about 100 boats in a bunch of different fleets racing over the three days...weather is predicted to be excellent, but then any day on the water is better than a day "in the office."
Back at the job site on Monday...

Day 212
Here we go!!!!
The framing went in for the gas fireplace in the living room and it was approved by Barbie, the boss...
Drywalling has begun. The guy came today and put up the ceiling in the kitchen and laundry room then moved to the green board in the master bathroom. A talk with him about when he would be finished and he said, "Monday." WHAT? Yea, he's coming back on Saturday and Sunday...will finish up on Monday...OK...
The couple of small spots of siding have been filled in and the exterior of "the box" is complete. Now the landscaping next week.
Rough sked; after drywall (sheetrock), painting, floors, cabinets, interior doors, countertops, plumbing fixtures, etc.
Well, there are quite a number of events yet to be accomplished...
Be well, do good work, stay in touch....

Day 207
Here's the siding...
There are only few bits left of siding to put on...
The insulation has been installed on the interior and inspected by the county on Thursday...
The drywall will be delivered on Tuesday so that will be ready for installation...
We are getting there...
The other stuff is coming together in the background; faucets, sinks, cabinets, counter tops, toilets, etc., etc....
Let's all cheer for progress...

Day 203
The insulation arriveth...
Today insulation guys arrived with the R-19 insulation and began on the second floor. There are soffit vents that allow air to circulate but not blow directly into the attic. After the drywall is installed they will blow in about 18" of insulation in the crawl space. Today they did the walls on the second floor filling all the spaces between the 2x6's on all the outer walls.
Tomorrow they begin on the first floor.
The interior has now lost all of the echo with the deadening from the insulation.
After the grading around the outside of the foundation they will put insulation in the crawl space under the first floor.
The anticipation is beginning to build but can't let it race ahead...

Day 199
Siding install...
We are one day away from competition of the installation of the siding...
The Natural Clay color really accentuates the appearance of the place and sets it off from the surrounding green of the leaves and grass (what grass there is)...
Next week the insulation will begin to be installed and then the drywall will go up...
From there it's all down hill with flooring and painting...
The weekend is here...and it looks like a nice one...

Day 197
Siding is easy...
Once you get started the siding goes up really quickly and the full effect of the visual appearance comes through. The front door and handle set are installed...the inspections have been done and the issue of the tempered glass was address and solved...
The appliances are safely ensconced in the living room on a temporary basis, until the drywall and cabinets are put in...
Earlier toady the insulation guy came by to take a bunch of measurements with a digital tape measure so that will be one of the next events...
'Till later...
"Say goodnight, Chet!'

Day 196

Big Day at the Job Site!
Had a couple of inspectors come through this morning and evidently we passed because we're still open for business...County inspector found that we needed tempered glass in the outside windows near the staircase landing...contractor believes he ordered them as tempered glass so will check with supplier...
Began installing the Natural Clay color siding and the marriage with the red siding is really neat...progress from here on the exterior will be quick...
Late this afternoon a truck arrived from Sears with the appliances...Tony and Melvin unloaded all of them within about 15 minutes...Note the strap system they use in the bottom photograph...I asked them how much they can lift with the system and they said, "you know the SubZero refer?" Yea..."they weigh about 1000 lbs and we can handle them."
That's impressive...
Appliances right now are residing in the living room until ready for installation...
Next will be the landscaping and finish siding...
"Good night and a good tomorrow."

Day 195
After almost 14 years of having an extension cord running the length of the dock we have two outlets on the pier to plug the boat into and, for Barb, to plug in Christmas lights...real 20th century...
The other photo is showing Barb's garden across the lawn to the "cottage" ready for siding...
Tomorrow is Inspection Day...
We'll have a bank inspector coming by to see if we're protecting their investment...There will also be inspectors here for the rough in of the electrical, plumbing and HVAC...and me without a clipboard...
There should be activity on the outside and the inside of the "cottage."
The appliances will be delivered tomorrow and be stored in the living room until the kitchen gets ready to have them installed.
I have the feeling that this place is gonna get crowded over the next few weeks...
Now it really gets interesting...

Day 192
We have Door!!!
And we have the accent siding on the dormers and over the front door...
Looks really sharp, if I do say so myself...
Rough in inspection to be done next week...
Rest of the siding to be delivered Monday and then put up...
After the siding then the interior drywall and flooring will be started...
We now have a rough schedule targeting the first part of June...

Day 190
Visual Evidence of Progress!!!
Derek shapes the last of the first pieces of siding to be place in the dormer triangle.
We are ever closer to the rough in inspection and we'll begin installing the siding next week.
Yesterday's road trip Barb and I took yielded a decision on the granite for the kitchen. The slab is treating with a process known as leathering. Diamond tipped fine wires are rotated over the top which produces a very subtle texture by rounding off the stones which make up the granite. You have to see the granite to get the full effect.
Getting ever closer,
Stay tuned...
